Human Nature
From the Desk of David Boyd National BGMC Director
In Mark 10:32-34, Jesus very clearly describes to his disciples that He is about to be betrayed, condemned, handed to the Romans, mocked, flogged, and killed. He then explains that He will rise again. You’d like to think the disciples would be a great support to Jesus after hearing this report of what Jesus will have to go through. Yet the next topic mentioned by the disciples is James and John asking for seats at Jesus’ sides in heaven, almost as though those two seats were to be reserved on a “first-come, first-served” basis. They seemingly were more interested in their positions in the kingdom of God than the sacrifice Jesus was making.
I’d like to think that we today would react much more differently. We wouldn’t be concerned with our place or our position in the kingdom of God, would we? Who knows? Our human nature, like the disciples’, seems to be a constant struggle to remain satisfied while allowing God to honor those who deserve honor.
This is exactly what Jesus explained. Jesus said those spots would be given to those who deserved them. He went on to explain in Mark 10:43-5, “Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all. For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
Let that be a reminder to us all. Let’s keep our “human nature” in check and continue on being the servants God has called us to be.
Have a great day! |
