The Bold Response
From the Desk of David Boyd, National BGMC Director
Have you ever noticed those people who seem to exude confidence? Often it seems they will receive favor to fund a project while others’ projects seem to go unnoticed. Strong personalities certainly find it easier to be bold and get what they want. However, the first chapters of Nehemiah show us the correct balance between humility, waiting upon God, and boldly stepping forth when the moment arises.
Nehemiah caught a dream from God. He verified that dream by prayer. He knew that rebuilding Jerusalem ought to happen, and he verified that God was asking him to be involved. He prayed for the opportunity to speak to the king in this regard. Prayer is the key that unlocks many unopened doors. It protects us from opening doors by our own might. Nehemiah prayed, and God opened the door as the king said, “Why do you look so sad?” (2:2).
Nehemiah was afraid, yet he spoke boldly and told the king of his dream to help Jerusalem. The prayers of Nehemiah allowed the opportunity to arise, and his willingness to be bold gave God the opportunity to continue the miracle. The king answered with a second question, “What is it you want?” (2:4).
Nehemiah again prayed one of those silent prayers for God’s help for boldness and guidance. He boldly asked for assistance in getting to Jerusalem, for assistance with supplies to rebuild the city, and for the king’s written blessing upon the project. The king granted all of these and more.
Boldness is having faith in the midst of those with authority over you. When God has given you a dream, and named you as the initiator of that dream, He will equip you if you call on Him. He will prepare you to act boldly on God’s behalf. This is not an excuse to go off half-cocked, as many individuals sometimes do. But it is an opportunity that should not be missed. Many individuals fail to fulfill what God is intending due to a lack of boldness to take the next step when God opens the door.
Let God lead you through time spent with Him. Then respond boldly when He provides the opportunity.
